Chartula is a typeface designed for the Franciscan Theological Centre (ISSRA), located in the city of Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis.
This typeface is actually the result of a complex visual identity project aimed at realigning, clarifying and simplifying the different institutions that are part of the religious institute.
Given the complexity of the very unrecognisable acronyms and acronyms, we opted for a stylistic choice that is connotative but grounded in the history of the place. The inspiration, as the name suggests, came from an analysis of the historical-religious elements that characterise the place. Chartula is a contemporary sans serif typeface that mixes the broad calligraphic nib with elements derived from the Uncial and Carolingian scripts.
We therefore developed the rebranding and the new visual identity, repositioning the image and communication of the courses of the two institutes. Our research focused on the visual and iconographic heritage, combining elements of their heritage with visual and linguistic modernity, for a contemporary result.
